As a avid PC user, i've been watching the mac progression very closely for the past couple of years, waiting to make the move into the world of Apple. Since the introduction of the Intel based notebooks I've been itching to jump. But for some reason I have been holding off. Not sure why… not sure if it's the price point or some other deep-seeded reason. After hearing about the new line of Macbooks I ran out to my local Apple Store and I must say, the new Macbooks are just perfect.
They actually didn't have any on display but after asking someone they gladly brought one from the back. It was the black model and I fell in love. It was great, because as I was in awe I noticed all of the other employees started gathering around it, this was the first time they had obviously seen it as well. A couple of things I noticed:
- Very lightweight and the screen resolution was little lower than I would like but at 1280 x 800 it still rocks.
- The screen had a very nice shine to it. If you familiar with the new Dell glossy screen, it's very much like that.
- The keyboard is a bit different. A much nicer feel.
- The mouse key is also new. It has a softer click, much more smooth.
- The finish on the black Macbook does not have the rough finish. Which is preferred in my opinion.
Is anyone else impressed that Apple can announce a new product in the morning and by lunch they are selling it?
It is very impressive, I haven’t seen one in person yet but I’m saving up for a black one.

Save your money for Applecare -
I didn’t purchase the $250 Applecare option and when my 15 month old iBook logic board crapped out Apple would recognize the manufacting defect that has plagued past iBooks and into my series.
Apple pretty much told me I could pay $350 for them to look at it and it would mostly be $350 more for the logic board… nice.

A coworker of mine’s been itching to get an Intel Mac notebook, but didn’t want to shell out 2 grand for a MacBook Pro. Upon hearing the news from myself this morning, he bolted to Delaware during lunch. A mere hour and a half later he was enjoying a brand spanking new MacBook (the $1099 model).
He said the same about the store too. There weren’t any on display and he had to ask the sales staff about them, but when he wanted to buy, they were more than willing to make the sale.

jacob: I learned that lesson the hard way as well. I purchased an iPod 4g about 18 months ago. 15 months later the harddrive goes out and it was over the 1yr warranty and the “geniuses” told me that I had to purchase a new hard drive at $250. The other option they gave me is I could trade in that unworking iPod for a 10% discount on a new one. So yes, that is great advice, definitely get the Applecare.
mike: same here, while I was at the store everyone was abuzz because they had made the first Macbook sale. And it was the black one

[...] What's really interesting is the traffic patterns that i'm seeing coming from Digg and Reddit and how they compare together. As the traffic dies down from my previous post I'll be sure to post some findings. Not sure that you would call it the "Digg Effect" or "Reddit Effect" since I didn't get on the homepage but it shows what the "non-effect" can do. [...]

[...] Todays news, cool stuff and some pictures. Yesterday, I told you about Apple's Macbook. It is discussed further here: http://davie.wordpress.com/2006/05/16/macbook-first-impressions-from-a-pc-user/ at davie's blog. Today I can bring you some great photos of the black version. To see my photobucket album of the photos: http://s57.photobucket.com/albums/g225/shadowoflinux/Black%20MacBook/ Continuing the topic of harddrives, Hitachi announced that it will be selling Perpendicular Recording harddrives. Perpendicular Recording is a new technology that allows more data to be stored on a disc that is based on today's Lognitudinal harddrives. Supposedly within the next few years, all harddrives will become new Perpendicular based ones, replacing today's Longitudinal devices. InfoWorld explain how this technology works The method is similar to the longitudinal recording used in today's drives in that it relies on magnetically charged particles for data storage. In today's drives, the north and south poles of the magnetic particles run parallel to the disk, but in the new method they are arranged perpendicular to the disk. The result of this new arrangement is that each particle occupies a smaller area of the disk's surface and so more particles can be crammed onto the disk. The Travelstar 5K160 drives, Hitachi's first 2.5-inch drives to employ perpendicular recording, can hold up to 160G bytes of data, compared to up to 100G bytes on the current longitudinal recording-based Travelstar 5K100 line of drives. The 2.5-inch drives are typically used in laptop computers. [...]

moochy: I thought the same thing… in pictures it looked like a cheap version of an inspiron. But I must say after seeing it in person, I completely changed my mind. Not sure why, but it comes off bad in the pictures i’ve seen.

Cheap version of an inspiron…. hmm… i dont know about that, inspiron is a big bulky, ugly, beast… pretty sure it’s as cheap looking as you get.

As a long time mac user, I have owned a lot of desktops and notebooks from Apple. This new macbook pro is one of the best new products they have done in a while. I also prefer the white color scheme. I hope to get one in the near future and donate my old mac laptop to my son, who at not quite age 4 has already learned how to use it (which says something for the simplicity of the user experience of a mac). Can’t wait to buy one.
