This makes me horribly sad. If it wasn’t for the 4 day weekend i’d be depressed all day. But if you do anything right now I hope it’s to go out and backup all of your databases. Heck don’t stop there. Make sure to backup your code, documents, pictures, music, EVERYTHING. Harddrive space is cheap, DVD’s are cheap, heck webspace is cheap too… there should be no reason you can’t do a full recovery from any catastrophic failure.
I’ve never used CouchSurfing, but I appreciate them because it offers an all-to-real-reminder that harddrives and computers WILL fail.
Here’s some links to help you in your adventure:
Online Services
- Amazon S3 - Provides a web service interface which you can communicate with directly. Probably more useful in a programming environment but the type of applications which can be built off of this should be very cool. Uses an interesting pay model. You pay per data tranfered and total data used. $0.15 per GB-Month of storage used. $0.20 per GB of data transferred. So for storing a 5 GB file transfered once it’ll be $.75 + $1 for the first month and $.75 for every additional month. Not bad.
- AllMyData.com - P2P solution where you store files on other people hard drives and in return they store it on yours. Currently for ever 10 meg you share you get 1 meg free.
- BackUpMyBlog - Service which helps you backup your mysql based blogs. 10 MB of backup space and each backup is compressed so 10 MB will typically store 30 to 50 daily backups. Free while in beta.
- Box.net - A very nice solution. You get 1GB of storage for free or 5 GB for $5/mo
- ElephantDrive - Is working with Amazon S3 and is offering unlimited amount of storage for fee during their beta test.
- GoDaddy - Get up to 2 GB for $20 a year
- iBackup - IBackup has been in the top 2 rated online backup solutions for years 2003, 2004 & 2005 by PC Magazine. Provides many different types of plans, starting at the economy plan you can get 5GB for $10/month.
- iomega iStorage - Different packages available for home or professional. For 5GB for a home account it’ll cost you around $43.00
- Mozy.com - Still in beta but has won the PC Mag Editor’s Choice Awards. Has 2GB account for free and 30GB for $5/month
- Omnidrive - Still in private but looks promising.
- Openonomy - Looks interesting, has a programming API to do some interfacing with the system. Only provides a free 1GB account (for now)
- Streamload - Provides up to 25 GB for free. Allows you to put all of your digital files online and provides a way to share your videos. Has received many acolades from Time, PC World and Mobile Magazine.
- Strongspace - Provides an SFTP communications between you and your backups. You get 4GB of space for $8/month.
- XDrive - Has been featured in a number of publications such as NYTimes, USA Today and Information Week. Provides a free 5GB account for 30 days. After that it’s $10/month
Desktop Applications
- FEBO and CLEO - Are used to backup all your FireFox extensions.
- SuperDuper - Mac backup software. It’s a shareware app and it’s $30 to buy.
- WinBackup - A great desktop backup tool. It’s completely free!
Don’t forget rsync.net.

I wouldn’t want to backup to a site that didn’t let me specify my own encryption key. Otherwise, you’re giving someone else all your data! Mozy works great and lets me specify my own encryption key. Streamload does not.
One could encrypt the files before backing them up, but that’s a hassle. Of course, you have to trust the backup provider to actually do the encryption at the client - they could just ignore it, or store the key with your files, or …
Xdrive never worked reliably for me. Connected is another service not mentioned, but their client software stopped working for me and their support was useless.

Check out Vembu StoreGrid (www.vembu.com). Has all the regular bells and whisltles and some more - in a real neat UI that actually makes backups less of a pain! There’s a free edition too for up to 3 computers in a network! Wish CouchSurfing knew this yesterday. Oh well…

Try using gmailfs it will turn a gmail account into a drive on your local machine. Great for backing up small important files. There’s also Yahoo briefcase, which is amazing for small backups (30 mb free). As far as software goes try Second Copy, which is a beautiful little program. The best solution here is to set it up to backup critical data to your ipod, since you take the thing with you.

inexpensive and all you need to do is to set it and forget it.

I second the recommendation for SyncBack from http://www.2brightsparks.com . It comes in a freeware version, no nags, no time out, missing only a few features like automatic FTP upload.
Comment by Tre — July 2, 2006 @ 2:25 am
Carbonite is ok, if you don’t want to use any brainwaves to setup your backup, but it does not give you snapshots of your old files, so if you file becomes corrupt and get backed up, kiss it goodbye on Carbonite, too.
Mozy is about the very best featured online backup I’ve found, and I can backup all of my important documents, email, finances, etc using its 2GB free service. No other service comes even close to Mozy’s pricing if you want more space. I highly recommend it. http://www.mozy.com
Comment by bybydayjob — July 2, 2006 @ 6:47 am
Oh, forgot to mention, Carbonite is not unlimited in practice(read the EULA). They throttle you to 500MB per day upload after 50GB, and they can kick you if you are at above average usage for all users.
Comment by bybydayjob — July 2, 2006 @ 6:56 am
You’re right, bybydayjob, Carbonite is for people who don’t want to use any brainwaves on backup. And guess what - that’s 99% of people. Backup is insurance. You shouldn’t have to think about it.
Comment by Danh — July 2, 2006 @ 3:13 pm
How can anything be unlimited in practice?
Comment by absi — July 2, 2006 @ 3:18 pm
Wonderful! Thanks for the compiled list above. So much about all these backup drives. I would suggest the perfect backup is still to spend a couple hundred of quids to get an additional hard disk drive and store all your data.

[...] It all started about a month ago when I read about couchsurfing closing shop and I decided to compile a list of backup services. Simple enough post but I thought it would be helpful to share. After posting it, I submitted up to Digg here. As you can see I was the only unfortunate soul who dugg it… and I had no choice. After it was up, I immediately did what any geek would do… I started watching my stats in one window and Digg spy in the other. But nothing was hitting… no diggs, no clicks… people just didn’t like me. [...]

Our accountant for example spends a third of her working time at home, round at clients and at her office. So the ideal backup solution for her laptop is an online backup system that automatically runs in the background uploading new and modified files and documents on to the secure server whenever she is connected to the internet. I had online backup for three months with another supplier. They were ok but the sql server backup was intermittent and was not being resolved despite lenghty tech support calls. I tried backupanytime and am delighted with the results. My backup has nit missed a beat since being setup in March and I did a successfull test restore without issue.
